first Growing 3d printed wheelchair for children

Aloi is a concept for a growing active wheelchair for children with infantile cerebral palsy. The aim is to create a contemporary design of a wheelchair for children that meets their needs and grows with them. It is the first wheelchair for children which is entirely made out of 3D printed components.

Background

why focus on cerebral palsy?

That’s because cerebral palsy is a very common cause of motor impairment in children. 42% of affected children with a disorder of the central nervous system suffer from cp. And that’s quiet a high number of cases (vgl. Masuhr and Neumann, 2007,160).

why 3D PRINT?

When finding materials, the aim is to pick up new and, above all, contemporary technologies and transfer them to the wheelchair development. As a result, all components of the frame are produced with a 3D printer.

WITH GROWING

SEAT WIDTH, SEAT HEIGHT AND SEAT DEPTH

Aloi is designed in a way which allows the wheelchair to change in seat width, seat height and seat depth and to grow with the child. In manufacturing, existing processes are reconsidered and modern technologies are used instead of conventional manufacturing processes. Aloi is made entirely of 3D printing filament.
